Unethical Conduct Complaint Filed against Chief Justice Cliff Taylor
Fundraising letters unethically solicited funds from lawyers

LANSING—Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Cliff Taylor has again pursued unethical fundraising tactics to protect his endangered reelection to the Michigan Supreme Court, according to a complaint filed by Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. Today, Brewer filed an unethical conduct complaint against Taylor with the Judicial Tenure Commission.

“This continues a pattern of unethical conduct by Taylor,” said Brewer. “From abuse of his state-provided car to accusations of corruption by a colleague, Taylor has time and time again displayed an arrogant disregard for his ethical obligations.”

The complaint cites a fundraising letter on Taylor’s behalf sent by former Governor John Engler, which violated Canon 7 of the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct. The canon requires a disclaimer that was not included in the letter.

“The people of Michigan are ready for change in our scandal-plagued Supreme Court, and Cliff Taylor represents the status quo,” Brewer said. “We will do everything necessary to defeat him this fall, and unethical fundraising will not save him.”
